Where to Fish in Marathon Florida: Local Anglers Guide

Marathon, Florida is the perfect blend of deep blue Gulf water and the rough and wild Atlantic. You get access to both, and this section of the Florida Keys offers some of the most diverse fishing on the East Coast.

The destination is also popular with snorkelers, divers, and families looking for a wonderful vacation kissed with plenty of sun and sand.

What Fish Can You Catch in Marathon Florida?

Okay, so for our anglers out there, you want to know what you can catch in Marathon. Since you get both the Atlantic and Gulf, you have a vast assortment of species that you can catch here.

Tarpon

Tarpon is definitely towards the top of the list of the most desirable catches on the planet. They put up a heck of a fight and that’s the challenge that brings people here year after year.

Snook

If you’re fishing closer to the shore in your own boat or even a kayak, you might catch some snook. They put up quite a fight as well and they’re plentiful throughout the shallow waters of the Florida Keys.

Snapper

Fish the bottom throughout the natural reefs surrounding Marathon Florida, and you might catch some snapper. These fish love hanging around the reefs and wrecks beneath the surface so toss your line out around there and you’re bound to find some.

Blackfin Tuna

If you’re chartering a boat and want to fish a bit deeper you can catch blackfin tuna. Right around “the hump” as locals call it is where you stand the best chance of finding them, and this area is known for bringing in quite a few prize-worthy fish.

Mahi Mahi

If the thrill of catching something unique brings you to Marathon, you’ll want to target Mahi Mahi. These fish are elusive, and they have one of the highest staminas of any fish. So, when you hook one, be ready to fight for a while.

Sailfish

Plenty of billfish are found throughout the Gulf Stream but few as desirable as the Sailfish. These are incredible fighters and an exciting catch when you pull one in.

Where to Fish in Marathon Florida

If you’re planning on catching any of these great species in Marathon Florida, you’ll need to know where to find them. The locals will fill you in but here’s a little taste of what this section of the Keys has to bring.

The Marathon Hump – If you’re visiting Marathon Florida, you need to check out the hump. This is one of the best places in Florida for boat charters because the water is as deep as 1,000 feet and you can expect to find monsters here if you charter the right crew

Oceanfront Park – This is a great spot if you have your family with you. If you’re looking for something that the whole family can enjoy while getting a little fishing in, Oceanfront Park is the spot.

Seven Mile Bridge – The infamous Seven Mile Bridge brings tons of anglers to this area each year. It’s an iconic location and should be on every anglers bucket list. Fish hang around the bridge all year long and this area brings some of the best tarpon fishing on the planet.

Bahia Honda State Park – Once you cross over the bridge you’ll end up here. This incredible park offers plenty of space for the kids to run around and incredible shallow water fishing for trout and tarpon.

Sombrero Beach – The beach offers an ideal spot for surf fishing if that’s your game. Here, you can enjoy complete free-range fishing while your family hangs out on the beach.

Marathon Fishing Guide

There are many ways to fish Marathon Florida so you need to make sure you’ve got a strategy.

By Charter

This is by far the best way to explore everything that Marathon has to offer. There are so many species and ways to catch them but you’ll want to have an expert team by your side. Best of all, you can choose what type of charter you take.

There are different types of charters that target certain fish in specific habitats.

For example, you could hire an inshore charter if you’re interested in catching snook and trout.

This is the best way to get the most out of your trip and actually catch something that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Marathon Deep Sea Fishing

By Boat

If you’re looking for an enjoyable experience but you’re not completely sold on the fishing aspect of it. You can always rent a party boat and sail the water without having to worry as much about fishing. Of course, people who want to fish still can, but you won’t have as many restrictions and limitations as you would on a fishing charter.

By Kayak

There are so many waterways and channels in the shallow water for you to explore. If you’re more of the kind of person who prefers to fish alone, kayak fishing in Marathon Florida is a great way to find peace and catch some incredible fish along the way. Load your tackle box full of plugs, spoons, and jigs for inshore saltwater fishing.

By Shore

If you’ve got a family, chartering a boat and taking a long trip might not be an option. That’s okay because there are plenty of great locations like Bahia Honda and Sombrero Beach where you can get some fishing in while your family enjoys themselves as well. When you’re done fishing, hang up your rod and spend some quality family time.

Final Thoughts

If you’re still wondering, why Marathon? Why here when there are so many other great places dotted all throughout the Keys?

In our opinion, very few locations can offer as many family-friendly activities as Marathon. If you’re looking for the perfect blend of the aggressive fishing trip and relaxing family outing, Marathon Florida is the place for you.

Captain Scott Thompson is a local fishing expert that will put you on fish and enrich you with years of knowledge of Marathon Beach.

Captain Scott had the pleasure of fishing with a wonderful family this month. Amauri, his brother Marcos, his son Marcos and his son Marco along with two young ladies came out to explore what offshore fishing had to offer. They were traveling from Brazil to spend some time at this beautiful destination. While here, they had to get out in the deep blue sea.

Marathon Deep Sea FishingThey adventured out on a two day fishing charter out of Marathon Beach. The weather conditions were great on both days. Sea conditions were not as great on the first day creating an opportunity to fish closer to shore. While fishing there, they caught several species of fish. The main catch was migrating and spawning Redfish. Most of the catches of redfish weighed in at 20-50 pounds.

Sea conditions laid down and allowed them to go offshore the second day. Bottom fishing was what they wanted to do while offshore fishing. Captain Scott took them 25 miles offshore to one of his productive bottom fishing spots. After several drops, they started hooking into big red snapper. Cut bait was the magic on this fishing trip.

This awesome group got to experience many different catches. They had a grouper on as well but you have to know how to fish for them. When grouper get hooked into, they want to run and dig into the rocks. Once this happens, you are most likely going to lose the fish.

Some additional species caught were sea bass. Sea bass can be caught on the bottom as well. Interesting enough, the reef they were fishing also was holding barracuda. This group really enjoyed landing a 5 foot barracuda.

Captain Scott really enjoyed fishing with these clients. It is always nice to be able to share something you love with travelers and visitors. Captain Scott holds Marathon Beach close to his heart and would love to show you what is so magical about this destination. He looks forward to seeing you on the water next time.

Family Redfish Fishing Charter in Marathon Beach, FL

Family Redfish Fishing Charter

Outdoor activities can be the perfect way to spend quality time with your families. When you are visiting Florida, enjoy some time in the great outdoors. Florida has endless opportunities to do this because of the expansive natural habitats. Redfish have flourished here in Marathon Beach and we would love for you to catch the biggest one of your life. Come enjoy a family redfish fishing charter next time traveling to the state!

Sit back and enjoy as our local experts take you on an adventure of a lifetime. All you have to do is step on board and everything else will be taken care of you. After meeting your captain at the boat ramp, you will get a chance to enjoy the scenery on the way to your fishing spot. Captain Brad Kayholm will be your local expert for catching redfish in Marathon Beach. He has years of experience of catching some of the biggest redfish you will ever see.

October was a very strong month for catching redfish here in North Florida. As the months roll on, the fishing will continue to be strong. You may have to be more patient as the temperatures drop but you will still have a great chance at catching some big fish. Sometimes being out on the water isn’t about catching big fish. North Florida Fishing is more about being outdoors while the weather is cooler. Setting the hook is an added bonus as well as a trophy class fish. Many people lose touch with the activity of fishing rather than catching. Enjoy the process of catching a fish and it will make that catch even better.

Luckily, when you are traveling to Marathon Beach during these fall months you have a great chance at catching some quality fish and numbers of different species. Captain Brad had the pleasure of fishing with Ray, his wife Peggy and their grandson Raymond. After conversing for multiple months about when the best time to come fishing, the decided October was going to be the best time. Just to get out on the boat and on the water made all that time worth it.

Family Redfish Fishing Charter 3Redfish fishing can get slow at times, hence the reason why you have to stay patient. The Marathon Beach waters hold resident trophy redfish so you can also find several nice ones. Ray and his family caught a nice redfish right off the bat. It was a 31 inch redfish that put some smiles on the faces of Ray and his family. Ray was here to help his wife Peggy catch the fish of her dreams, a big bull redfish over 40 inches. After some time of not finding this fish where they caught the first one, Captain Brad made some changes.

One of the downfalls of fishing in Florida is that you can experience some boat traffic. Boat traffic will prevent you from getting in your fishing spots. Also, the amount of vibration the boats give off while slow the bite down and keep the fish away. When you are Florida Inshore Fishing, you have to make sure that you choose the right times and tides to go fishing. Find quiet times when the tides are moving right and get out on the water.

Due to slower action, Captain Brad made a decision to head further south of Marathon Beach looking for better waters. It was not long after getting there that they got in on some action. Drifting is the best technique to cover water and catch redfish. You have to drift with live bait in order to have the best success in catching some quality fish. Whether you want to use crabs, pin fish, mullet or croakers is completely your preference. They are all effective especially this time of year.

Family Redfish Fishing Charter 1

As a result of moving, they were reward with the fish they were looking for. 8 year old Raymond was up to bat as the rod starting going off. Watching the bait being eaten is one of the most exciting parts of catching big redfish. Raymond was hooked up on a nice redfish and was fighting it all by himself. Just to watch this little man fight this fish was an absolute blast. Every time the redfish would make a hard run and take drag his face would light up. Raymond was sitting on a cooler as he was fighting and as the fish pulled he would get lifted slightly making for an even better experience. It was a true fight that made the trip truly special.

Captain Brad admits that this was one of the most unique battles that he had the chance to experience. Certainly, it is moments like this that make being a fishing captain one of the best jobs ever. Just to provide a family with this much joy makes all the hard work so much sweeter. The action was not over as several other big redfish made it to the boat.

Family Redfish Fishing Charter 2When you key in on a technique make sure you don’t change things up to quickly. Starting our drift over, the action persisted. Peggy was up next! All Peggy wanted was a trophy redfish for her birthday. She has always wanted one over 40 inches and this was the trip that could make it happen. It was not long into the next drift that a fish ate the bait. The next big battle began as her fish was fighting and running hard. Peggy fought the redfish to the boat and once it was landed started shaking with excitement. Captain Brad put it on the deck and measured it. Peggy got her birthday gift catching a 41 inch Redfish making this trip a success. It was another amazing experience to watch someone live in a moment they will never forget. Peggy was shaking with accomplishment and excitement making everything so much more precious.

Ray was up next for his 40 incher but unfortunately could not find it. The battle for Peggy though was not over as the next drift landed her another battle with a 40 inch redfish. Redfish fishing in Marathon Beach will be something they never forget!

Captain Brad is truly honored to be part of this incredible outdoor experience. Ray will be back for more and in search for his trophy redfish. You just never know when the bite will come!

Marathon Beach is a prime Inshore Fishing destination. Redfish Fishing is absolutely fantastic this time of year. You can also enjoy an abundance of other species as well. Every adventure will be a unique experience for you and your family. When you are visiting North Florida, getting outdoors is a must especially on a family redfish fishing charter! Beautiful weather and perfect fishing conditions led to a strong bite right off the bat. Pablo and his friends reeled in numbers of fish of each species. After these species were caught, schools of blackfin tuna came up and they started putting them in the boat as well. It was not long after this that the Mahi-Mahi showed up. They did not catch a bull but put several quality fish in the boat. After trolling live bait and ballyhoo, they slowed down their fishing tactics and landed some bottom fish including snapper.

As a result, you have much great success putting a wide variety of species in the boat. Sailfish put up an excellent fight truly worth experiencing.

Due to the excellent conditions even though it has its water issues, you can catch big redfish here most of the year.

The main goal of this fishing charter was landing the biggest fish of their life. They wanted to shatter both of their redfish records. Captain Brad Kayholm is our local expert and professional Captain in Marathon Beach, Florida. Inshore fishing is his specialty and knows the backwaters of Mosquito Lagoon very well. Sea trout and Bull Redfish are the main focuses in Marathon Beach. Captain Brad will work endlessly to get you on the fish of your dreams.

Ed and his kids came out to adventure and enjoy a fun packed fishing trip. Ed is a really good friend of Captain Brad’s father. Captain Brad wanted to get the kids out on a quick trip before they headed back home. They wanted to spend some quality time with their dad while also getting the chance to bend the rod and catch some dinner.

Trout Fishing has been on fire. If you want to load up the boat quickly with some keepers, you can get it done. Ed and his children were out there for 2 hours before they caught a limit along with several other fish. In total, they caught over 20 fish. There is nothing like going out and getting everything you came for in that period of time. Double digits are being caught on a daily basis. You just have to get on the water with a Captain that knows all the hot spots.

Captain Brad is looking forward to the next opportunity to go fishing with Ed and his kids again soon. They will be back for more of this incredible fishing action in the future.
